There was a man who wanted to transcendent his suffering so he went to a buddhist temple to find a Master to help him. He went to the Master and asked: “Master, if i meditate four hours a day, how long will it take me to transcend?”

The Master looked at him and said, “If you meditate four hours a day, perhaps you will transcend in ten years.” Thinking he could do better, the man then said, “Oh Master, what if I meditateted eight hours a day, how long will it take me to transcend?”

The Master looked at him and said, “If you meditate eight hours a day, perhaps you will transcend in twenty years.”

“But why will it take me longer if I meditate more?” the man asked.

The Master replied, “You are not here to sacrifice your life. You are here to live, to be happy, and to love. If you can do your best in 2 hoursof meditation, but you spend eight hours instead, you .. [read more]

Happiness is a cold shower

Recently a friend of mine said, that over the centuries the process of showering changed and that the original purpose was to cleanse the body from toxins by taking a cold shower, rather than using warm or hot water and soap to wash the dirt off the skin.

I did some research and yes, it seems that cold showers extract toxins from the body and not only that. According to this interesting article “Cold water spins our chakras and forces them to let go of anything we may be holding onto. Cold showers have the ability to strip negativity away from our energy bodies, whereas warm water actually crystallizes negativity on to the aura.”

I decided to do a self-experimentation and started taking cold showers. The first one was a horror experience. But with every following shower i got more and more used to it. I notice that after the shower I felt “recharged” and pretty good.

On a day where I was in my head .. [read more]

Breaking someone’s habit

Be The Change You Want To See In This World – Mahatma Gandhi

During 1930’s, a young boy had become obsessed with eating sugar. His mother was very upset with this. But no matter how much she scolded him and tried to break his habit, he continued to satisfy his sweet tooth. Totally frustrated, she decided to take her son to see his idol – Mahatma Gandhi; perhaps her son would listen to him.

She walked miles, for hours under scorching sun to finally reach Gandhi’s ashram. There, she shared with Gandhi her predicament. -
“Bapu, my son eats too much sugar. It is not good for his health. Would you please advise him to stop eating it?”

Gandhi listened to the woman carefully, thought for a while and replied,
“Please come back after two weeks. I will talk to your son.”

The woman looked perplexed and wondered why had he not asked the boy to stop eating sugar right away. She took the boy by the hand and .. [read more]

Knowing yourself

A young man went to an abbot from the Sceta monastery, wanting to follow a spiritual path. “For one whole year, give a coin to anyone who provokes you.” said the abbot.

For 12 months the young man gave a coin away whenever someone provoked him. At the end of a year, he returned to the abbot, to find out his next task. “Go into town and fetch me food.”

As soon as the young man left, the abbot disguised himself as a beggar and — taking a shortcut he knew — went to the gates of the town. When the young man approached, he began to insult him. “How marvellous,” said the young man to the so-called beggar. “For a whole year I had to pay everyone who provoked me, and now I can be provoked for free, without having to spend a thing!” Upon hearing this, the abbot removed his disguise. “Whoever is capable of not minding what others say, is a man on the .. Avoid false harmony

The monk Chu Lai was offended by a teacher, who didn’t believe in anything he said.

However, the teacher’s wife was a follower of Chu Lai and demanded that her husband apologise to the wise man. Annoyed, but lacking courage to upset his wife, the man went to the temple and murmured some words of apology.

“I do not forgive you,” said Chu Lai. “Go back to work.”

The wife was horrified: “My husband showed humility and you — who call yourself a wise man — were not generous!”

Chu Lai answered: “There is no rancour in my soul. Still, if he is not sorry, it is better to acknowledge that he is angry with me. If I had accepted his apology, we would be creating a false situation of harmony — and this would increase even more your husband’s anger.”

Angulimala Sutta: About Angulimala [MN 86]

themoon.reads 17 April 2010 | 0 Comments

I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Savatthi at Jeta’s Grove, Anathapindika’s monastery. And at that time in King Pasenadi’s realm there was a bandit named Angulimala: brutal, bloody-handed, devoted to killing & slaying, showing no mercy to living beings. He turned villages into non-villages, towns into non-towns, settled countryside into unsettled countryside. Having repeatedly killed human beings, he wore a garland (mala) made of fingers (anguli).

Then the Blessed One, early in the morning, having put on his robes and carrying his outer robe & bowl, went into Savatthi for alms. Having wandered for alms in Savatthi and returning from his alms round after his meal, set his lodging in order. Carrying his robes & bowl, he went along the road to where Angulimala was staying. Cowherds, shepherds, & farmers saw him going along the road to where Angulimala was staying, and on seeing him said to him, “Don’t go along that road, contemplative, for on that .. [read more]
